of passages, except in the case of large families, nor

do they appear to restrict the grant of a passage to a

definite period of time of a tour of service.

The post of Assistant Auditor has, I submit,

always been considered as belonging to the senior branch

of the service, and the Senior Clerical and Accounting

Staff to the Clerical Establishment. This eine so,

I submit that the present position savours of the

incongruous for whereas an officer of the clerical

branch of the service is granted a first class passage because his final emoluments happen to rise to over £100 p.a.,

an Assistant Auditor because his limit of

salary is £700 p.a. is only entitled to a second class -

passage.

The root of the whole question lies in the

contentious matter of the Audit salaries. Personally I did not make any representations to, nor did I appear.

before, the Salaries Commission as a number of officers

did: but I consider that even at this late date,

something might still be done to make the salaries of

the officials of the Audit Department more commensurate than they are at present with their responsibilities

and status. I do not think the Government would be

unsympathetic, and it would cost a small sum to make a

proper readjustment. I am not entering in detail into

comparisons. You are I believe well aware of them, but

taking the case of Ir. Bradley's salary alone, I submit that, the maximum salary compares most unfavourably not only with the salaries of the Junior Officers of his
